AI Overviews

Google's AI-generated summaries shown at the top of search results that synthesize information from multiple sources to answer queries directly.

What Is AI Overviews?

AI Overviews is Google's feature that places an AI-generated summary at the top of search results for qualifying queries — above organic results, ads, and featured snippets. Introduced as Search Generative Experience (SGE) in 2023 and rebranded to AI Overviews at Google I/O 2024, it uses Google's Gemini model to synthesize information from multiple web sources into a single composed answer, with cited links displayed alongside the summary.

Unlike featured snippets, which surface a single passage from a single URL, AI Overviews aggregate and rephrase content from multiple sources. The model selects which sources to cite based on relevance, authority, and content structure — and those sources are displayed as thumbnail citations to the right of the answer. Getting cited in AI Overviews is a distinct optimization target from ranking in position one.

Google has stated that AI Overviews appear on a significant and growing fraction of search queries, with early data suggesting 15–20% of U.S. searches trigger the feature, skewed toward informational, how-to, and comparison queries. The fraction continues to expand as Google refines the feature's quality and coverage.

Why AI Overviews Matters for Marketers

AI Overviews represents the most consequential change to Google's search results page in a decade. The feature captures user attention before any organic result — users see, read, and act on AI Overviews before scrolling. For brands investing in organic SEO, this creates an urgent new optimization requirement: ranking well is necessary but no longer sufficient if the AI Overview doesn't include your content.

The click behavior data is mixed but directionally concerning for brands not cited in Overviews. Studies from early 2024 showed that AI Overview presence on a SERP reduces clicks to organic results by 15–25% for affected queries — because users' questions are answered before they click anything. Brands cited within the Overview itself experience a positive halo: their content receives clicks from engaged users who want to explore the sourced answer further.

For B2C categories with high informational query volume — health, finance, travel, technology — AI Overviews affects a large share of top-of-funnel queries. Brands in these categories need an explicit AI Overviews optimization strategy.

How to Optimize for AI Overviews

  1. Target informational queries with direct answers. AI Overviews are most prevalent on how-to, what-is, and comparison queries. Structure content with clear, direct answers immediately following question-format headings.
  2. Use schema markup. FAQ schema, HowTo schema, and Article schema help Google's systems identify content structure and extract relevant passages with higher accuracy.
  3. Build domain authority. Google's AI Overviews favor sources it already considers authoritative. Strong E-E-A-T signals (Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trustworthiness) — demonstrated through author credentials, external links, and editorial quality — increase citation probability.
  4. Write in extractable paragraphs. Keep paragraphs focused on a single idea. AI models extract the most relevant paragraph, not the most relevant page — a dense, focused paragraph is more citable than a meandering one.
  5. Monitor which competitors are cited. Run target queries manually in Google to see which domains and URLs appear in AI Overviews for your category. Those are your content benchmarks.

How to Measure AI Overviews Performance

Google Search Console does not yet provide a dedicated AI Overviews report, though Google has indicated this is on its roadmap. Current measurement approaches include: manual query sampling (running queries in an incognito browser to check AI Overview presence and citations), third-party rank tracking tools that have added AI Overview monitoring (Semrush, Ahrefs, BrightEdge), and AI visibility platforms like Cintra that track citation share across Google AI Overviews alongside other platforms.

Track citation rate (% of monitored queries where your content is cited), domain appearance frequency, and whether your cited pages are receiving clicks attributable to AI Overview referrals. Segment by query type — how-to, informational, comparison — since AI Overview prevalence varies significantly by query intent.

AI Overviews is the highest-traffic AI search surface in existence — running on the world's largest search engine, with exposure to billions of queries daily. For most brands, it represents the largest immediate AI visibility opportunity: more volume than Perplexity and ChatGPT Search combined for most query categories. A content strategy that does not explicitly target AI Overviews citation is leaving significant organic visibility on the table, especially for informational and mid-funnel queries where AI-generated answers are most prevalent.
