People Also Ask

A Google SERP feature showing related questions users ask about a topic in expandable boxes, each containing a featured snippet answer from a web source.

What Is People Also Ask?

People Also Ask (PAA) is a Google SERP feature displaying a set of related questions that other users have searched in connection with the current query. Each question appears in an expandable accordion box. When clicked, it expands to reveal a brief answer — drawn from a web source as a featured snippet — along with a link to that source. Clicking a question often generates additional related questions below it, creating an expanding network of topic exploration.

People Also Ask began appearing consistently in Google results around 2015–2016 and has grown to appear in over 40% of Google searches. The feature appears in different positions on the SERP — sometimes directly below the first organic result, sometimes lower in the page, sometimes multiple times across a SERP.

Google populates PAA boxes using its semantic understanding of how topics and questions relate to each other. The questions shown aren't always directly searched in identical form — they're Google's interpretation of the question space around a topic. Each answer is pulled from whatever Google determines to be the most useful, concise response to that specific question found on the open web.

Why People Also Ask Matters for Marketers

PAA boxes represent highly visible real estate on the SERP. Appearing in a PAA answer places your brand alongside the primary organic results — sometimes above them — for questions your target audience is actively exploring. A brand whose content provides a concise, direct answer to a PAA question earns repeated, prominent SERP exposure without needing to rank position one for the primary query.

PAA also serves as a content research tool disguised as a SERP feature. The questions Google surfaces are drawn from real user behavior — they represent the actual follow-up questions searchers have about your topic. Mining PAA questions for a target keyword set provides a ready-made outline of content gaps: questions your audience is asking that your content may not yet answer.

From a user journey standpoint, PAA engagement keeps users within Google rather than clicking to your site. This zero-click behavior is a downside — but being the cited source within those boxes generates brand exposure and referral traffic from the subset of users who click through. Appearing in PAA generates both direct traffic and implicit authority signals.

How to Implement People Also Ask Targeting

  1. Extract PAA questions for your target keywords. Search your primary keywords and record all PAA questions. Tools like AlsoAsked, AnswerThePublic, and Semrush's PAA extraction feature automate this at scale.
  2. Add FAQ sections to relevant pages. On pages targeting queries where PAA boxes appear, include a dedicated FAQ section with questions matching or closely related to the PAA questions you've identified. Answer each question in 40–80 words — concise enough to be extracted as a snippet.
  3. Use FAQ schema markup. Adding FAQ structured data to pages with Q&A sections increases the likelihood Google will surface those answers in PAA boxes and as rich snippets.
  4. Answer the question immediately. The PAA extraction algorithm favors answers that begin directly with the response — not with preamble or caveats. Lead with the answer, then provide supporting detail.
  5. Target question-format keywords. Keywords phrased as questions ("how to," "what is," "why does," "when should") correlate with PAA triggers. Incorporating these formats naturally into content page titles and headings increases PAA relevance.

How to Measure People Also Ask Performance

Direct PAA performance isn't tracked in Google Search Console — it's folded into featured snippet impression data. Third-party tools like Semrush's Position Tracking and Ahrefs' SERP feature tracking can identify which PAA boxes your domain appears in for tracked keywords.

Monitor PAA question coverage as a content completeness metric: for each major topic area, what percentage of the PAA questions your audience encounters has your site provided an answer for? Closing coverage gaps drives both PAA appearances and overall content depth.

People Also Ask and AI search tools like Perplexity and ChatGPT share the same underlying user need: users want related questions answered as they explore a topic. PAA is Google's version of this conversational exploration, while AI chat interfaces extend it further through follow-up questions in a dialogue format. Content that earns PAA features — concise, factual, well-structured answers to common questions — is the same content that gets cited in AI-generated responses. Optimizing for PAA and optimizing for AI citation are increasingly the same activity: providing the clearest answer to the most common questions in your topic area.
